Blogging as a Home Business

Is Blogging Still a Good Home-Based Business in 2021?

The most frequently asked question among potential bloggers is:  Can I still make money from blogging these days?  To rephrase and refocus that question a bit, in this article, we’ll answer the question:  Is blogging still a good home-based business in 2021?

The short answers to these questions are:  Yes, you can still make money blogging and yes, blogging can still be a good home-based business.  However, there have been a number of significant changes over the years—and we’ll go over those in a bit.  Making money blogging does take more work these days, but it can still be very rewarding—both from a monetary and an aesthetic perspective.

How Blogging Used to Work

Back in the day, it used to be that you could just turn out content left and right to generate high search engine rankings and more web traffic.  The emphasis was on quantity—the more often you could post to your blog the better (at least 5 times a day was ideal).  You also didn’t have to worry nearly as much about your content being laser-focused—anything remotely related to your niche was fine.

How Blogging Works Today

Primarily because of changes with Google, the above approach no longer works with blogging today.  In order to get higher rankings and more traffic, you’ve got to display topical authority on a subject.  Yes, you still need to have a good amount of content, but the quality of your content is more important than the quantity.  It’s no longer about how many times a day you can post to your blog, it’s about providing the best and most relevant helpful content to your readers on your particular niche.

Important Steps in Creating Your Blog

Choose Your Niche Carefully

If your goal is to make money blogging, I always recommend starting with the three top evergreen niches:  Wealth, Health, and Relationships.  People always want to have money, be healthy, and have companionship.  These three niches are at the top of the list for blog monetization.

However, the key is to niche down and find the right sub-category within these three main niches that both matches with your interests and the interests of your blog visitors.

Do Your Research

Along with doing research for your blog’s niche, you’ll also want to put in the time to research what keywords you should focus on when writing your blog posts.  Fortunately, there are some excellent online resources you can use to find the right keywords for you to target.

Plan Out Your Content

While it’s tempting to just go ahead and start writing your blog posts, I definitely recommend that before you get started, you plan out what content you’re going to have on your website.  Obviously, your blog is a continual work in progress.  However, before you launch your site, you want to already have a quality base of content that your visitors can enjoy.

Once you have your initial website planned out, you can use an editorial calendar to plan and schedule out your future blog posts.

Important Steps in Running Your Blog

Be Consistent

In talking with some of the most successful bloggers, the one tip I’ve learned above the others is that you have to be consistent with your content creation.  That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to post to your blog every single day or multiple times a day.  But what you need to do is come up with a schedule and then stick to it.  That might mean posting to your blog every day, two or three times a week, or even once a week.

The key is to stick to a consistent schedule.  That way your audience knows when to come back for fresh content and it also helps to keep you motivated to provide your audience with new content they can use.

Promote Your Content

It’s also important these days to remember that creating and running a blog is only half of the equation for success.  If you really want your blog to succeed, you’ve got to spend time promoting it as well.  That means utilizing social media channels like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, etc.

The Key to Blog Monetizing Success

These days, the key to blog monetization success is to have your blog become an authority site on your particular niche.  Implementing the above steps is the way to get started creating your authority blog.  However, there is a lot more you can do.
